Day 4 Tucumcari, NM to Vega, TX

Day 4 Tucumcari, NM to Vega, TX 78.5 miles, 1412 ft climbing #NM2NY4LFSA

We all agree the cycling gods spared us today. The day began cloudy and much cooler. It was 80 degrees when we left Safari Motel in Tucumcari. Very cool and comfortable old 66 motel. We headed down the block for our best breakfast yet at Kix on 66.

By the time we hit the road it was still under 90 and nice and cloudy. After a few miles we rode into light rain and rigged our rainflies judt in case. It was the insurance we needed to keep the rain away.

I observed to Chandler and Lauren that when we have been approached by motorists or people on the street about what we're doing it's hard not to expect a wisecrack, but that's not what we get. We get respect or wonder or simply a kind word and well wishes. The only negative interaction has been during our shakedown ride at home in Santa Fe where in the course of two hours we twice had kids in cars yell at us or say something offensive. Maybe Ssbta Feans need to work harder on child rearing, but that is a different blog.

After our first stop, Lauren got sick on the bike and we pulled off the road for a bit. We are trying to figure out what she can eat that works for riding. This is a very new experience for her and her body. With 275 miles in four days we're already in the food for fuel mode.

Later in the day, I had a hard bonk that took two pop tarts, a PBand J sandwich, and a bag of peanuts to recover from. It took about twenty minutes before I could ride again and 2 hours before I felt OK again.

Tomorrow is a good day for a short ride followed by a day off in Amarillo. I'm thinking about a movie maybe but Lauren is thinking water park. We'll see.
