We a started at our house in Santa Fe by wheeling our bikes on the neighborhood path to the rail trail. It seems like a narrow path riding it but it's a tough fit getting bikes with panniers through. We hit the Rail Trail and rode to a spot up the street to meet Lauren's friend, Cleo, who got up early to ride with us to the shop.
We hit the road about 8AM with Cleo and headed out to the shop. At the last rise on Old Las Vegas Highway before the shop we saw someone in SpinDoc Kit waiting at the top. I didn't recognize the rider until we were almost next to him. It was Jo VanCutsem, our trusty shop mechanic, waiting for us on his single speed mountain bike videoing us coming up the hill.
We rode with Jo to the shop and as we rode
in the parking lot, we heard cow bells and cheers from a couple of dozen people who had come out to see us off. Our friend, Carol Siedel, had arranged with Cafe Fina, next door, for breakfast burritos, coffee, and fruit. We chatted and ate and after about an hour we saddled up. We had about ten riders leave with us. Four went as far as the first turn, about six miles up the road, while six continued. At Glorietta two more (Ted and Paul) turned around and the four remaining (Gordon, Charlie, Karol, and Rick) rode all the way to the campground with us.
When we reached the campground, we were met by our friends, Knute and Beth with cold beer and margaritas as well as Gordon's daughter, Rachel, with a chicken parmesan dinner complete with salad and garlic bread it was very good.
We had a quick dip in the KOA pool before dinner, took advantage of the laundry facilities, and had a good nights sleep in our Kozy Kabin.
