Day 8 McLean, TX to Elk City, OK

Day 8 McLean, TX to Elk City, OK 78.9 miles, 3320ft climbing #NM2NY4LFSA

The morning started cool and calm. We got on the road early, unfortunately we are fueling in real time so it is not really possible to ride far without breakfast which means we have to wait for the local diner or hotel breakfast to be served before we start riding. It was another big day at just shy of eighty miles. We average close to 15mph until about 2 o'clock and then begin slowing down as the afternoon heat comes on. We typically average just over 10 the last few hours and end up at 12 1/2 or so for the day. Today we got in in time for a dip in the pool and laundry in the hotel. When we wheeled the bikes into the lobby, the desk clerk couldn't believe we'd been riding all day on the heat but was thrilled to meet someone active. He said he was a runner and was used to checking in guests, all day, every day, whose biggest form of excercise is gripping a steering wheel. We opted for pizza delivery  and an early night.

Our McLean motel. Lean is the key part of this stay.

Pre ride breakfast.

Very cool old ConocoPhillips station on 66 in Shamrock, TX. The ladies working there were so nice and generous. They made us sit for ice water. The Trxas DOT kept it alive with a grant.
